URL Fields

We are separating two or three kinds of URLs (856u) for display/use in records: fulltext, version or partial, and supplemental URLs. When coded correctly, URLs can be identified by the following factors. Updated 6/18 to change ordering so that we can include 4* as a backup if not *1 or *2.

856 indicator type of link single record label results label
*1 Version/Partial - version of the resource (sometimes this is used to link to a digitized version of the resource, which is normally *0) Online Version not displayed
*2 Supplemental (this may be a finding aid) Online Supplement not displayed
*0 OR 4* Fulltext unless z or 3 contain magic words (addendum, appendices, appendix, appendixes, cover, excerpt, executive summary, index) that suggest it isn't. Access Online Access Online
*0 OR 4* Version/Partial if z or 3 contain magic words (addendum, appendices, appendix, appendixes, cover, excerpt, executive summary, index) that suggest it isn't fulltext. Online Version not displayed

Indexing

No indexing, just storing, because searching by URL just isn't a thing.

Link Text

While the 856 fields are supposed to include link text, this text varies so widely that it's rarely useful.

Use the domain. See this record's JSTOR link.

For the enormous serials solutions links, we'd want to just reduce the URL to serialssolutions.com.

Some catalogs have more advanced links, which include a name and even icon for the target website. That's not an MVP feature but we may consider it.
