Sources of Catalog Data

Our MARC records come from a wide variety of locations and sources. Some may be deleted and reloaded regularly. Others may be imported and kept. Still others may be imported, edited, and retained. Some are created on-the-fly for things like reserve items or equipment. All our source data is in MARC.
These are some example sources:
- Records created by catalogers, usually in Connexion (original cataloging)
- Records imported from the OCLC WorldCat database through Connexion (copy cataloging, we may make edits)
- One-off records obtained from a vendor or other source and added by a cataloger.
- Monthly batch loads from Serials Solutions - E-Journals (full delete/reload, note that IU has a technique we might use to overlay these)
- Batch load of Serials Solutions monographs (iterative new/update/delete load)
- Batch loads of things to which only law has real access but which show up for everyone with a note that they're only for law - these are all ebooks
- Batch loads of ETD records harvested via OAI-PMH, crosswalked in XSLT to MARC, and edited by a cataloger
- MARCIVE load - Bibload of e-docs/GPO
- Batch loads of ebooks, most often adding new stuff, but sometimes deletions
- Batch loads of records from the Directory of Open Access Journals
- Batch bibload for acquisitions for print which are then reviewed by catalogers (similar to Connexion but different source)
- Batch loads of streaming video - Kanopy, Docuseek2, Alexander Street Press, media education foundation, etc. (most likely to have deletions)
- Periodic batch creation of MARC records for microfiche based on spreadsheets or external data sources. Normally these have only a handful of fields.
- Period batch creation of MARC records for electronic resources using available data that someone in Cataloging transformed into MARC.
- On-the-fly records created to manage things in the moment, done in WorkFlows
