Remote Access
This page walks you through how to get remote access to CAEE computers so that you can run professional versions of the SketchUp and Rhino software. The information presented here can also be found on the UT Engineering IT's Wiki which is linked below:
Below are the instructions, two notes:
- I tried to include all the possible information I could so the descriptions are lengthy. Use the links above for a TLDR version.
- I work on MacOS so the PC instructions are a little lacking
The VPN is required to access your campus desktop from off campus as well as other UT services. Both the Remote Desktop and Virtual Desktop require you to connect to through the VPN
To connect to UT's VPN, two-factor authorization is required. To setup DUO for authentication, visit this page.
The application you will be installing on your computer is Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client. To install:
- Go to vpn.utexas.edu and enter your UT EID and password.
- Authenticate with DUO
- Select the
Download
button to download and install the software.
- Start the application Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client
- Enter
vpn.utexas.edu
into the connection address and clickconnect
- Login with your UT EID, your UT EID password, and enter one of the following options for the DUO Passcode:
- push: sends a notification to your smart phone via the DUO app
- sms: sends a text to your phone with passcodes that you can enter
- phone: calls your phone number (recommended)
- numeric passcode: passcode to enter after choosing sms or push
Use the Remote Desktop to access:
- SketchUp Professional Version
- Autodesk Revit
Note: For Windows users, you can skip the first subsection below because the Remote Desktop Software is automatically included on PCs. For MacOs and Linux users, you will need to first install the software.
The software should already be installed 🥇
The steps to get the software are simple:
- Open the App Store and search "Microsoft Remote Desktop".
- Install the application and don't worry about setting anything else up - you just need the software to open the files to connect you to your Remote Desktop.
For Linux users:
- Navigate to this webpage.
- Look for the latest, stable release and download.
With the necessary software installed, you can begin connecting to a LRC computer.
- Navigate to this webpage to access links for the LRC machines.
- Choose from the computers listed, click
connect
, and then clickdownload
.
- Navigate to your downloads folder and click the file to start connecting
- Remote Desktop should automatically open
- Login with your UT EID and password but be sure to put "austin" before your EID like shown below:
- Assuming you entered in the correct credentials, you will begin logging into the LRC machines and can be begin to access certain software.
Use the Virtual Desktop to access:
- Rhino
All faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students should have access to the system.
The following are unsupported for use with AppD:
- Linux
- Chromebooks
- Generic HTML5
MacOS users must use Safari
Steps to use the Virtual Desktop
- Connect to the VPN
- Visit appd.engr.utexas.edu/
- Login using your UT EID and password
- If this is the first time you have used this service or the software is out of date, you will be prompted to download and install the client.
- MacOS clients will be asked for the website when updating - please enter "https://appd.engr.utexas.edu".
- Login again using your UT EID and password
- Once the vWorkspace application is installed, it will be accessible via the Applications folder.
- After connecting, choose the appropriate CAEE Desktop from your available list of virtual desktops.
- Once you are connected you can begin to access the software listed here
