One putting together posts yesterday I started to consider when it made sense to linkout and when it made sense to repost openly licenced content.

In the end, I thought it made sense for things to be reposted when:

  • the place we're linking to is a bad reading experience
  • we control the place we're linking to
  • we can add significant value in the repost (e.g adding an image)
  • we only want a small part of a big piece

This can be closed when the instructions for editing have been updated & posts have been changed to follow this (right now I've just always linked out)

FWIW, my blog site is pretty awful these days, poor uptime, slow load AND there's no image with my post so I'd be delighted to have my content just copied over:

PS was there an 'embargo' on linking to openinorder.to ? Sorry if I broke that, few have visited my post so far anyhow and of those even less will have read to the end...

Thanks, Ross! Helpful to know that.

I think there was an embargo of sorts, but we were sending it from Thursday last week so I think you're fine. It's been a good state for 1+ weeks anyway, so no harm done!
