Manually merge unit and integration tests onto the dev branch

The code refactoring done during the creation of unit and integration tests broke the core functionality of the tool. Hence, the previous dev branch has been renamed as unit-integration-tests. The new dev branch has been created from a previously working commit with no tests and refactoring.

We need to manually bring in the changes that are in place on the unit-integration-tests onto dev branch and make sure that the core functionality is not broken.
