Although QField is designed as a natural extension of QGIS, the ability to create a new project directly within the app could significantly improve its adoption.
I’ve encountered field professionals who excel at on-site work but are not interested in using or learning complex software. Many of them are discouraged by the need for QGIS to initialize a project, as QField currently requires a prior setup in QGIS. This perceived "complexity" often prevents them from even trying the tool.
A feature allowing users to create a project directly in QField, with a simple and intuitive form builder, could help its adoption.
For instance:
[+] Create a project
- Add layer (geometry, name)
- Add fields with basic settings (e.g., field name, format, title)
- Optionally configure fields (e.g., photo attachments, range limits, etc.)
- Set basic constraints (e.g., not null, unique values)
- Optionally add advanced constraints, like expression-based validations (though these might not be heavily used by new users).
This streamlined process would empower more people to use QField, especially those unfamiliar with QGIS or less inclined to delve into its complexities.
This would be like an entrance door into QGIS.
