When I introduced the first Mail Toaster, nginx wasn't a Good Enough[TM] reverse proxy. It didn't have websockets support and there were other issues at the time. The issues were significant enough that it justified separately installing haproxy.

Arguably, haproxy is still a better reverse proxy, but today nginx is good enough. Since both are good enough, for many the choice of which to install will depend on the one you have the most experience with.
