Is there a reason why the module headers for Apache2 is not enabled by default which is required in many Typo3 installations?

No reason in particular, other than not being mentioned as an "official" requirement, if I remember correctly, . PRs to add it are welcome, though.

Your are right, it's not required always, however it might be helpful for performance reason and I needed it for some CORS settings.
I have just made a PR with some changes, I also added ghostscript for PDF support. Hope that is fine with you?
