It is highly confusing that micropython for the microbit shifts the address internally, and the mbed platform doesn't.
The python platform is more consistent with what I am used to with other platforms, but that might be just a coincidence. In anyway could the docs maybe make a clear note of this? I searched a long time for the reason why my I2C device wasn't working when I switched to mbed from micropython.
I eventually stumbled on bbcmicrobit/micropython#119, which made it possible for me to figure out what was going on.
