I’ve recently installed latest versions of postfix, cyrus-imapd and cyrus-sasl and other required packages for two mail systems on openSUSE leap 15 and Fedora 29, respectively, and tested the servers actively. One problem is about cyrus-sasl. I used saslpasswd2 to create a user test and password test, and sasldblistusers2 gives test@myhostname: userPassword, but when I testsaslauthd -u test -p test -s imap [pop, smtp, …] [-r myhostname or mydomain], I always got 0: NO "authentication failed".
However, when I testsaslauthd -u cyrus -p cyrus-password, or other user accounts of the computer, I always got 0: OK "Success."
I tested various settings in all *.conf files, but cannot yet get a 0: OK "Success." for testsaslauthd -u test -p test.
I’m wondering why saslauthd can authorise passwords created by su account of the computer, but cannot authorise the passwords created by itself?
