web ui: On what exact condition does Pods appear as boxes without labels

These captures are from different Applications under a single ArgoCD instance. Browsing the relevant code, I found that showPodGroupByStatus dictates which layout is used:

I've given up digging further into what it means. Could someone explain what determines the view?
