I t would be nice to be able to compile just the C examples; I don't work in FORTRAN, so they just take up space for me.

@malcolmroberts I have created a 4.5.0 example doc with just c/cpp programs using this method. The document is created from the perspective of the writer to tackle multiple versions and new features. I think we should have made two documents to ease the readers' experience.

FYI, the issue has been addressed in the v6.0 release with the make options "ccpp-only" for C/C++ examples and "fortran-only" for Fortran examples.
