Currently there are no standardized approaches in linking Specimen to DocumentReference.

Suggested Improvements:

it would be beneficial to establish a standardized approach for capturing DocumentReference references to Patient/Participant/Group and Specimen. A possible solution where:

• Consistent with all other FHIR entities, the subject would link to the Patient/Participant/Group associated with the document.
• basedOn would refer to the Specimen/Group(Specimen) utilized to generate the referenced file.

This would help promote consistency and clarity in linking DocumentReferences to both Patient and Specimen. Especially the Specimen(s) that have been processed by an instrument or device to produce assay results as captured in real-world laboratory files.
