The code generates the maps, but it seems like the generated terrain does not match it.
Maybe because the generated maps are saved as PNG, and are not displayed correctly ingame - I tried playing around with converting them to DDS but never quite got it to work.
I've also seen vertex planets that have the cratered maps shown in the map view and when distant from the planet, but the planet terrain itself looks nothing like it - hilly or mountainous. An extreme case is having a tall mountain disappear when getting away from it, and turn into the cratered surface a long way away.

I'm seeing it a lot less now, maybe it happened because I was messing around with it.
However, the second point still happens, but I think only if a VertexPlanet is chosen to be kerbin.
I've attached screenshots of the exact moment that shows this happening:
Also attached the generated system this happened in - the relevant file is Woough.cfg test.zip
I've removed all other images because the file was too big
