What

WordPress 6.5 added support for AVIF, but Calypso still does not allow this file type to be uploaded.

The file can be uploaded via wp-admin on WordPress.com, but the images display as grey thumbnails in the Calypso Media Library.

Why

To bring parity with core WordPress
