Quick summary

Confusing copy on wordpress.com/log-in screen.

Input field label says “Email Address or Username”,
then I’m told I can’t use my email, I need to use my username Why?

  • A more explanatory message might be nice.
  • Also a “Don’t know your username?” link.

First discussed here p1669993017493879-slack-C029GN3KD

  • I sent a user invite from my a8c account to my personal email
  • I clicked on the invite link in my personal gmail
  • I get to dotcom login screen
  • I enter my email
  • The UI says "Please log in using your WordPress.com username instead of your email address."
  • But I don't know my username and am now frustrated by the mixed message copy on the login screen

image

  • Then I try out the log in with gmail (maybe I did that in the past, I don't know)
  • Again more confusing messaging in the UI
    image

Steps to reproduce

  • I sent a user invite from my a8c account to my personal email
  • I clicked on the invite link in my personal gmail
  • I get to dotcom login screen
  • I enter my email
  • The UI says "Please log in using your WordPress.com username instead of your email address."
  • But I don't know my username and am now frustrated by the mixed message copy on the login screen

What you expected to happen

I expect to be able to use my email.

Failing that, I expect an explanation of why I can't use my email.

I expect a link to figure out my username in case I don't know what it is.

What actually happened

I can't log in. Or rather I will have to spend a lot of time figuring out how to get into my account.

I ended up using the "Email me a login link" to log in. So that was the workaround.

The visual design is a little different - but the confusion is still in place. Would be great to tidy up the messaging and functionality here.

@jordesign Are you sure this is still an Issue? When I tested this every time I entered an email address it sent me to the Email me a login link flow. Seemed to work ok and thus I think the wording is in fact accurate.

I think if that's the case then it's ok to close. I was a little unsure as well - as my 2FA setup was making it hard to test.

@jordesign jordesign closed this as not planned Won't fix, can't repro, duplicate, stale Jan 15, 2025
